A year as Vice-Chairman at Asset | International Business & Management

After nearly 11 months of full time work at study association Asset | International Business & Management (IB&M), it is time to look back at an unforgettable, wonderful year. For a whole year I have had the opportunity to fulfill the position of vice chairman in the board and be committed to the active members that make up our department. It has been a great experience!

Who am I?

First a little bit about me, my name is Iris van Grootheest, I am 21 years old and currently a fourth year bachelor student International Business Administration. During my second year at Tilburg University, I decided that I would like to develop myself besides my studies and I wanted to meet new people. That resulted in becoming a member of the Quest committee, an interactive symposium with the opportunity to get in touch with companies in the function as external affairs officer. Besides that, I also enjoyed the informal activities that IB&M had to offer. Due to the combination of formal and informal activities and the international atmosphere, I decided that I wanted to be in the board. After my exchange, I started my full time board year at Asset | International Business & Management in January 2014. This meant a year of not studying and a lot of partying. Sounds great, right? Well, that was not exactly how it works, because there was also a lot of work that had to be done, but I loved every minute of it!

What does a board year look like?

Every week is different, but everything you do is dedicated to the active members. That is also what I like so much about my function, to inform and convince potential active members about becoming active and join one of the almost 20 committees Asset | IB&M has to offer. Throughout the year I have had a lot of active member talks, committee meetings and social activities to arrange. It is a great experience to work with Dutch students as well as a lot of international students and make them feel welcome at IB&M. Together with 5 other enthusiastic board members I have been trying to accomplish this the past year. This also means that every single week we have activities, which would range from career events to board days to parties, but you can be sure that every week is different from the previous week.

The week of a Vice-chairman

A major part of your tasks during the week are meetings. Every week you have the board meeting of Asset | International Business & Management, here we discuss current issues and update each other. Within Asset, I am also a member of the Asset Academy, this is a Faculty Wide Organ made up of all the vice-chairmen. Together we are responsible for organizing the TOP week for Asset and filling all the committees. Within Asset | IB&M I also coordinated 4 different committees and we would have meetings almost every week. Besides these weekly meetings, I would also work on my daily tasks, which would include for example organizing a Combiparty with 10 other associations or making the year planning for the next academic year. As you can imagine, these are not tasks I am busy with every single week, but the variation is also what makes it so much fun.

What was my most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment of this year was the trip to Portugal. Together with a group of 23 enthusiastic students we visited Porto and Lisbon. Throughout this week we had 6 company visits, a lot of walking tours, of course a Port wine tasting and definitely enjoyed the Portuguese night life! Not only was it a great group to go on a trip with, everything went smoothly with the organization of the trip as well, which is quite a relief if you are the coordinator of the committee. Besides that, the days where the active members would just walk in after a party or beer cantus, are also days I will definitely miss next semester when I will be finishing my bachelor.Mid Image 3

In January I will start conveying everything to my successor, who will be announced on January 13. After that I will gradually give all my tasks to the person who will take over my tasks next year. In case you have become very enthusiastic about becoming active or curious what a board your entails after reading my story, please do not hesitate to send an email to vice-chairman@asset-ibm.nl and I hope I can make you just as enthusiastic about Asset | International Business & Management as I am!
