A board year as Chairman at Asset | IB&M

A board year as Chairman at Asset | IB&M

Dear reader,

First of all, nice that you are interested in my story of being the chairman at Asset | International Business & Management. Before you start reading my story I would already like to convince you to do board year at IB&M by saying: it is awesome! If you did not find these words convincing enough I would love to elaborate on my weekly doses of practices, meetings and pleasure.

Who am I?

My name is Bas Scheepers, 22 springs old and a graduate of the bachelor degree International Business Administration. After finishing my bachelor in three years, several committees at IB&M and an exchange to Seoul, South-Korea I wanted to take a break from studying to acquire some practical skills. During my exchange I brainstormed about the possibilities to acquire these skills. I could do an internship but the biggest disadvantage of this is that you cannot consider yourself as a student anymore since you get sucked up in regular business life. However, a board year gave me the opportunity to still enjoy student life while acquiring practical skills within the second largest study association of Europe. It was an easy decision to make. I wanted to do a board year. After being chairman of the IBA Committee and the Consultancy Day committee I would like to become the chairman of the board of IB&M. As a chairman of a department you also become a board member of the Asset general board. The dual function was something I found really attractive since you need to make decisions on department level but also for Asset in general. Eventually choosing for a board year as a chairman was perfectly suiting my aspirations.

What does a board year look like?

During a board year you develop many different skills. You get in contact with a lot of new interesting people who all have their oxwn opinions and perspectives. You learn to coordinate the committees of IB&M and Asset to accomplish different goals that you set together. The best thing about a board year is that you are in the board with a total of six people who all work towards the same goal: serve all our students as best as possible. You learn a lot from you board members since you are together for 50 hours a week.

The week of the Chairman

As a chairman my week starts with the general board meeting of Asset. In here we discuss and review issues related to all seven departments. For example: the policy, acquisition, budget, Asset committees and member registrations. After this meeting you start preparing the IB&M board meeting by checking the minutes and agenda. On Tuesday you have to lead the board meeting and discuss current issues with your board. Furthermore, every board member describes what he or she did last week such that you keep the overview whether all tasked are being performed. The rest of my week is spent on one of my four committees, events of IB&M and some general tasks for Asset and IB&M.

What was my most memorable moment?

One of my most memorable moments was our Department Members Meeting in February. Many active members where present which is for the respective board a sign that students enjoy their time at Asset | International Business & Management and that they feel connected to our department. Furthermore, the time I spend with the board on our board weekends are also great memories.
