A board year as treasurer of Asset | IB&M

Currently I am in the board of Asset | International Business & Management, fulfilling the treasurer position, for 7 months already. I would like to share my great experiences with you by means of this article and I hope I can make you as enthusiastic about my function as I am. I would definitely recommend doing a board year to everyone because this is something I would not have wanted to miss and you can develop your social and professional skills to the fullest!

Who am I?

First of all, I will tell you something about myself. I am Kalleigh van den Hemel and currently 23 years old.  In my second year at university I wanted to do something besides my study and thus I joined T.S.R. Vidar at which I had two fun years. However, I felt like this was not enough to enjoy my student life to the fullest and I felt I could develop myself even more, especially in a more formal way. Therefore I decided to start two committees at Asset: the Quest committee at Asset | International Business & Management and the Career Committee at Asset | Strategy & Logistics. During the first weeks as an active member I joined all activities and I got to know a lot of new awesome people! This made me quickly realize that after my master I wanted to do a board year at Asset | International Business & Management to develop myself personally as well as improving my social and professional skills. Therefore, I applied for a board year in April and I got the function of my choice: treasurer. I started from July onwards as the treasurer of the board of Asset | International Business & Management, which meant a lot of nice activities and parties, as well as a lot of responsibility and cooperating with your own board members as well as the board members of other departments.

What does a board year look like?

The first thing you think about when doing a board year is for most people probably a lot of nice activities and parties. However, this is not the only thing. Even though some members are wondering what we are doing all day at the rooms, we all have a lot of responsibility for performing our tasks. Basically, being in the board is running your own small organization with 5 other board members. As you can imagine this leads to quite some responsibility. Another thing that is really nice about doing a board year at Asset | International Business & Management is that no week is the same. This is due to the fact that we organize a large variety of different events, from parties to career events, thus ranging from informal to formal events.

The week of a treasurer

Of course, the most obvious tasks of the treasurer are the financial transactions and the bookkeeping of Asset | International Business & Management. The bookkeeping is done in an official bookkeeping program called Twinfield. In this way you really learn bookkeeping which I think is valuable for your cv and you get real-life experience with bookkeeping compared to your theoretical accounting lectures. Next to these tasks, you also have 4 committees which you coordinate. At the beginning of the year the committees are divided amongst the different board members. Some board functions have specific committees attached to them but this is not the case for the treasurer. The committees I coordinate are the IB&More, the Finance & Accounting day, the International Committee and the Intercontinental Travel Committee. Coordinating committees is also really nice due to the fact that you closely interact with the committee members and you work towards a specific event the committee organizes. However, the sometimes difficult thing when coordinating committees is that you should really coordinate and only intervene when this is necessary. This sometimes proves to be more difficult than expected. Next to that, you also cooperate with the treasurers of the other departments by means of the Treasurer Meeting which is once every two weeks. During this meeting financial issues concerning Asset or all the departments are discussed. Also you of course have some other board tasks which you fulfill and vary a lot.

What was my most memorable moment?

During the past half year I had lots of memorable moments. Actually, there were that much that I do not know which one to choose as the most memorable one. Just working at the rooms every day with the other board members already provides so much fun and memorable moments. Next to that, of course the announcement was one of the most memorable moments as well as both COdE beercantusses of course. Also the board weekend to Poznan (Poland) was something which I will not quickly forget. Next to that I hope that at least two memorable moments will still come, which are the Intercontinental Travel to Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile which I organize with my committee as well as The International Experience where we will teach English to children in Tanzania. But I am really of the opinion that the best experience is the interaction with your board members, active members and the board members of other departments, which resulted for me in some great new friends. I will definitely miss all of this when I will be working next year.
